Adviser Training & Development

Programs

The Adviser Education Program provides a variety of programming for new advisers, seasoned advisers, and the advising community.

Learn more about how to be involved with AEP on our About page.

The Advising Basics Workshop is for all new advisers. Offered every quarter, this training provides an introduction to UW advising, an understanding of the undergraduate student’s academic path, issues and policies around struggling students, a brief introduction to key tools, and connects advisers to key resources.

The Advising Basics Workshop is intended to supplement primary training with supervisor and /or departmental staff.

Lunch and Learn Workshops are a collaboration between Adviser Education Program (AEP) and the Association of Professional Advisers and Counselors (APAC).

Two Lunch and Learn workshops are offered each year focusing on the following themes:

  • Topics/best practices geared towards student services
  • Professional development and advancement for advisers' growth in their career.

If you would like to participate in a Lunch and Learn workshop by presenting on a professional development topic, please email AEP with a proposal at uwaep@uw.edu. The Lunch and Learn committee will review your proposal and will notify you within 5-10 business days.

The Annual Advising Symposium is an annual conference co-sponsored by AEP and the Association of Professional Advisers and Counselors (APAC). This conference consists of a keynote speaker and a variety of topical breakout sessions designed to support adviser professional development.

The purpose of this program is to encourage experienced advisers to continue their professional development, serve as leaders in the advising community, and contribute to the advising profession. Participants will reflect on their experiences and be recognized for their professional growth.

Program Eligibility

Current UW Seattle, UW Bothell, or UW Tacoma employee with a minimum of 2 years working in a professional advising capacity at UW and/or another institution (ex. academic adviser, program coordinator, athletic advisor).

Program Requirements

The requirements listed below allow participants to demonstrate ways they have contributed, led, and learned in their advising journey. Each component that a participant chooses must have an accompanying reflection, in other words there must be a minimum of 5 reflections–1 for contributing, 3 for learning, and 1 for leading. We encourage participants to suggest their own ideas for each component. AEP is happy to assist you with ideas. Note: We know that there were previous participants in the Master Adviser Program who were making progress and completing requirements, when the program was suspended in 2019. We want to honor your work, and encourage you to reach out to us, so we can talk about your experiences and figure out a plan that will work for you in the new Advanced Adviser Development Program.
